Description
In this one-day workshop Emily Trujillo will explain how to break down the fundamentals of weaving angles using linear design in a very basic and applied way. Students will learn how to calculate basic shapes within a tapestry. Students will start by calculating a perfectly proportioned Vallero Star (eight pointed star) using their chosen weft, warp, epi, and setup. From this starting point they will learn how to adjust for changes in setup and materials. Students are encouraged to bring a loom, so they can execute their calculations and understand why and how these equations are working within their piece. The focus of this class is designing/understanding design and not weaving techniques and is open to all skill levels. Students should bring a pencil, graph paper, and note paper. Maximum class size is 12.
About the Instructor: Emily Trujillo is an eighth generation Rio Grande weaver from Chimayo, New Mexico, who specializes in the techniques and logic of Chimayo weaving. Her parents and mentors are award winning weavers Irvin and Lisa Trujillo who started teaching her when she was only five. While her technique and design training is very traditional, she blends her love for music, media, and her modern experiences into her one-of-a-kind pieces to express who she is. She currently teaches six Chimayo weaving programs, lectures on history, and creates programs for preservation both in and out of New Mexico. All of her work is an effort to preserve her family’s dying 400 year old family weaving tradition.
