Description
Anna Wetherell would like to be a tapestry weaver, creating handwoven works of art inspired by remote landscapes, especially those of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, reflecting her background in geology and ecology and interest in the deep history of those landscapes. However, facilitating others to weave tapestry and exploring fabulous locations seems to have become a full-time occupation over the last few years! Some weaving does happen between the admin, thankfully, so the challenges, inspiration, and ‘What if…’ moments within Anna’s world of tapestry will be highlighted and discussed and illustrated alongside her endeavours to shift the balance more in favour of actually being a tapestry weaver. About the Speaker:
Anna Wetherell worked for over 20 years in the world of nature conservation, conserving designated geological and geomorphological sites and then moving into the world of wetlands and rivers, especially those that are groundwater fed. In late 2019 she took the opportunity to take voluntary redundancy, deciding that the opportunity to explore tapestry weaving in more depth was not to be ignored. Since then she has become one half of Nearly Wild Weaving and a co-owner of weaversbazaar, while running her own workshops and classes and being on the committee of the British Tapestry Group. Projects such as Waterline and the Murmuration Collaboration have meant that some weaving does happen occasionally, further encouraged by courses with a range of weavers such as Fiona Hutchison, Caron Penney, Sue Lawty, Elizabeth Buckley, and ongoing study with ArtyBird Carnforth. She has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions and demonstrates tapestry weaving at Farfield Mill as one of the team of Weaving Friends.
