Description
Description:Â Monica Setziol-Phillips is the instructor for this two-day workshop. Students will explore weaving with soumak, a technique using supplemental weft wrapping from the Middle East. Students will explore open and closed double soumak, reverse double soumak, and vertical double soumak. These techniques lend themselves well to developing rich textures to enhance and give depth to straight tapestry weaving. Students need to have a basic knowledge of tapestry. Students should bring a pre-warped frame loom at 8 epi and a selection of yarns in a variety of colors. Maximum class size is 10.
About the Instructor: A foreign language major with a BA in German, Monica Setziol-Phillips was bitten by the weaving bug at the start of her senior year at PSU. She wanted to take a course for fun, either weaving or ceramics but ceramics didn’t fit in her schedule. One semester became a full year, with Solange Kowert as her instructor. Following a stint in the Peace Corps, Monica began weaving seriously. After several years of teaching in parochial schools, she started teaching weaving at the old School of Arts and Crafts. She has long been fascinated with soumak, a middle eastern rug technique, and has continued to explore and employ its many facets in her work.
