Janette Gross creates contemporary wedge weave tapestries. In her talk, she will share her personal journey into wedge weave, through photos of early Navajo wedge weaves, Martha Stanley’s contribution to the technique, and contemporary wedge weaves including recent work from the Diné (Navajo) community. Janette will share her personal vision and how she has drawn from this ancient technique to create her own contemporary works. With intricate planning, and careful craftsmanship she tells us a woven story of her fascinating journey into the wedge.

About the Speaker:

Since retiring from a long career in business, Janette Gross has traveled on many informative textile tours. She studies weaving, natural dyeing and shibori techniques. She focuses on wedge weave tapestries, exhibiting nationally and internationally. She was one of two Rydell Visual Arts Fellows in Santa Cruz County in 2023 and the first weaver/tapestry artist to be selected in the fellowship’s 18-year history. Janette was a member of the Board and the Treasurer for the American Tapestry Alliance until June of this year. She has worked for many years with blind and visually impaired weavers in Santa Cruz, CA where she lives a few blocks from the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Her daily walks along the Bay provide endless inspiration.
