Description: David Johnson is the instructor for this 3-day workshop. Students will learn to weave with soumak knots to create a tapestry that has painterly qualities. Inherent in soumak is the ability to weave in an eccentric way, allowing the weaver to break away from the rigid 90-degree orientation of warp to weft. By weaving eccentrically, hills and valleys can be created down the length of the warp. Tapestry woven in this way has a free flowing and spontaneous quality which gives the finished work a fresh and gestural look. Variations in the technique will be explored as the weaving progresses. This workshop includes the lecture “My Evolution in Tapestry” which outlines the instructor’s adventure in weaving over the years. $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor for a 14” x 30” warped loom and some weft yarns. Suitable for all levels. This same workshop offered Jul 24-26. Maximum class size is 10.

About the Instructor: David JohnsonDavid Johnson holds a MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Through the ’80s he was at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, first as artist-in-residence and then heading up the fiber program. While at OSAC, he wove a five-year series of large-scale collaborative tapestries with Geary Jones. Over the years he has held positions at the Appalachian Center for Craft and has taught many workshops locally and nationally. David produces pictorial tapestry, representational work, as well as pattern-oriented work. Pictorial works often address social, political, and spiritual themes.  David says he views his art as a form of visual communication carrying a message in a way that transcends language.
